"Making it up as the go along!"

Your text goes hereIn light of the furore over Sam Newmans "mannequin handling" and subsequent tirade against a whole gender, the commotion that ensued (which, should have been more concise, is Sam a sexist or at worst a misogynist? Or does he merely use these provocative topics to boost ratings?) helped gloss over some other poorly researched views in the paid AFL media.
Three notable candidates at the weekend illustrated as " fact" what Monty Python might refer to as information from the "making it up as the go along" school of journalism.
Amazingly, The Age in Melbourne on Saturday 5th of May devoted the entire front page of their sports pull-out to the off the cuff assessment of Buddy Franklin Vs Travis Cloke, by Robert Walls, which from the outset is flawed as a premise for an article, one Buddy, is a possibly one in a generation talent, 161 goals in 63 games, on par for a 100 goal season from a position that in the forward line, that varies between being the foacl point of attack for Hawthorn or a shared role up front with the other 3 forwards. Travis Cloke, a Leviathan young man, although a best and fairness winner, with 67 goals in as many games is workmanlike "by comparison".
Walls must have stroked his beard in wonder to his research, as he pondered why his article didn`t contain one quote or source to support his assessment, as he observed Buddy that same afternoon against the Msgpies, despite Walls suggestion that buddy "is not overly brave. He will duck his head,he doesn`t like the unknown"", carrying a shoulder injury sustained the previous week, Buddy in the 7th minute of the 2nd quarter backs blindly arms outstretched into a pack causing a spill from which Mark Williams scored, for those who have watched Hawthorn, clearly Wallsy excluded, this is not an isolated incident. On more than one occassion in the game, Buddy in one on one with Nathan Brown, (who has been hailed for stopping everyone from Johnathan Brown to Goliath) backed under the ball with arms oustretched and simply outbodied the Magpie defender. Clearly Wallsy is "making it up as he goes along".
Meanwhile in radio land, prior to the same game, on Triple M, the normally impressive Garry Lyon mused whilst contemplating the roles of Daniel Bradshaw and Johnathan Brown up front for Brisbane, in light of discussions of Browny recent reduced impact, determined that the day of two big forwards sharing the load was gone in modern footy. Well you would`nt believe it, messers Franklin Roughhead & Williams kick 17 goals between them against the Magpies, the team renowned for durable defense, who were a kick away from the previous grand final. Brown was a subsequent withdrawal from Saturdays game against Geelong, so here` s a curly one Garry, maybe he is injured, and there is the reason behind the reduced influence.. Clearly Garry is "making it up as he goes along"
The evening before in radio land, the latest recruit to rent a quote, Grant Thomas opined about how physical training when left in the control of the conditioning trainers as opposed to the coaches, was no improvement, clearly in refernce to his time at St. Kilda where his introduced his corporate approach to the football, notably with leadership groups and the questionably perception of outsourcing he manifested, by constant reference to "training services". The decision he regards as the one he would change had he had his time over. Needless to say Grant` s ridiculous suggestion that coaches are better trainers than sports science professionals was unchallenged by his colleagues on SEN, although Neale Daniher via a telephone interview did state he disliked and didn`t want to become "an ex coach gobbing off" a siutable swipe at Thomas` s behaviour in the media. That aside, clearly Grant is "making it up as he goes along"
