Typical Yanks!
July 4th 2011 19:28
With the fourth of July celebrations still rife in the air o'er the land of the free, another time honoured tradition began to fall suitable into place.
With a 5-2 victory against local rivals the New York Mets on Saturday evening, the Major League's most celebrated and illustrious team hit the big 50.
Behind the in-form Philadelphia Phillies, Joe Girardi's men become just the second team so far this season to get to 50 wins, as the season crept past it's half way stage.
With the press and the media quickly jumping on the bandwagon of the early front runners, Red Sox and Phillies, the Yankees have gone about their business in a quiet yet constructive manner.
Bearing the expectation of the largest fanbase of any team in the Major League, as well as constantly fighting to keep the wolves from the door comes with the territory for those on the Yankees roster. Their previous success and domination in the history of the World Series brings as many pressures as it does rewards. Much like Manchester United in the EPL, the neutrals relish in the misery of the rich and successful and simply put the majority of the baseball public bar their own faithful, love to see the Yankees lose.
With just the one World Series win in the last decade, we could be forgiven for thinking that the playing fields had levelled somewhat and long gone were the days of single franchise domination.
As I mentioned, the season so far has seen the major sports companys, most notably ESPN had the Red Sox and Phillies as a sure thing for the 2011 season. But just like the greatest of sporting champions across the ages, the New Yorkers never know when they're beaten.
And right now they sit in a familiar position. Atop the East division in the American League, leap-frogging the Boston Red Sox on the way as if to assert their domination with a calculated swagger.
With Yankees Stadium providing a formidable obstacle for visitors and being Ranked equal 30th in terms of numbers in the 'L' column are more poignant factors which the Yankees will use in their posturing and assertiveness. They mean business again. Like a wounded animal whose pride has been tested, it's high time that normal service was resumes for A Rod, Sabathia, Teixeira et al.
